SHILOH CLASS SPECIFICATIONS
The Shiloh class is the largest Starfleet-designed ship presently in service with Starfleet. The 7 ships of the class presently in service are all in service to the 1st Fleet, under the command of Grand Admiral Amanda Quinn-Banach.
Shiloh began her development as the forth Soveriegn Class Starship to be constructed. She was to have followed USS Soveriegn, USS Independence, and USS Enterprise-E into service sometime in 2373. However, before construction began in 2371, the Borg invaded the Alpha Quadrant. It was then that an officer presently serving aboard USS Independence realized what Starfleet needed: A new warship. Commander James Millenhiem forwarded his proposal to Starfleet command, and was later called to San Francisco to give a full briefing. His briefing would convince Starfleet Commanders that Starfleet indeed needed a new warship, and they authorized Commander Millenhiem’s design.
The basic hull geometry is taken from both the early designs for Soveriegn and Defiant. In one early design, Soveriegn was to have downward and forward sweeping warp nacelles. This design feature struck Commander Millenhiem as being intimidating, a key in warship design. Down and forward sweeping has been seen on other races’ ships, most notably the Klingon B’Rel class Bird of Prey. The hull design itself was the same as Soveriegn, but extended. Overall length of the ship from the tip of the bow to the aft edge of the engineering hull would be 285 meters—the same as the overall length of Soveriegn from Bow to Warp Nacelle end caps. The ship was also extended by an extra ten decks, making this new vessel taller than the Soveriegn. With this in place, Commander Millenhiem noticed something missing. Remembering seeing a striking feature on the Defiant Pathfinder design, he decided to incorporate it into this new ship. A notch was placed in the Forecastle (pronounced Folk’sel, the extreme point of the ship’s bow) . this feature rounded out Shiloh’s structural differences with her stablemate, Soveriegn.
Shiloh was designed to look as impressive and intimidating as possible. The basic design of the ship accomplished this. Shiloh’s warp nacelles are canted outwards from the hull at 45 degrees, giving the nacelle and pylon the appearance of an inverted gull-wing, a shape reminiscent of the World War II-Era American Fighter, the F4U Corsair. This also had the advantage of helping to overcome the warp field distortion created by the Nacelle’s positioning. The expanded hull allowed for more room to carry a number of different things. First, Shiloh would be one of the few active starships that would carry a pair of Danube class runabouts. These were normally allocated to Space stations and planetary bases. Also, she would be able to possibly carry as much as a Company of Starfleet Marines, or replace half her shuttles, and the two runabouts, with a squadron of Starfighters.
Shiloh was invisioned as a Fleet Battle cruiser, and her initial weapons loadout from the Yards proved it. Shiloh left Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards carrying much more firepower than any ship Starfleet had ever commissioned. On her saucer section was mounted ten Type XII Phaser arrays, and two torpedo tubes in the notched bow. Also, she had the distinctive Quantum Torpedo turret that was a hold-over from the Soveriegn class. Also a hold-over were the two torpedo tubes mounted below the Deflector Dish. Facing aft, she had four torpedo tubes, two mounted beneath the main shuttlebay at the aft of the saucer and two under the fantail of the stern. As far as Phasers went, a phaser strip was mounted above each of the impulse engines, one mounted on the trailing edge of each nacelle pylon, one above each pylon root, and four on the extreme tail (two each dorsal and ventral on the aft deck). The vessel left the Yards more than capable of defending the Federation, which was an advantage considering that, by this time, it was 2374, and at the height of the Dominion War.
Shiloh is one of the best defended capitol ships in the fleet. 3 sets of shield generators allow her to take considerable damage. The trade-off is available power for multi-mission packages. This wasn’t considered an issue, since she was developed during the Dominion War. The advantage of this system is that the shields can be set to maintain a minimum shield level, usually not lower than 90%. Under normal (meaning Combat) operating procedures, the primary set of shields is engaged in “Conform” mode, with the second and third sets at hot-standby. As shield energy ablates from the Primary grid, energy from the second and third grid recharges the primary grid.
Shiloh is also well armored. 10 Centimeters of Ablative Armor, the same armor found aboard USS Defiant, covers the entirety of the ship’s outer hull. Heavy Tritanium Alloy Armor, usually of 20 CM thickness, is embedded around critical spaces, including the Bridge, torpedo storage facilities, the Warp Core, and Anti-matter storage. 20 CM of Tritanium Alloy and 5 CM of Ablative Armor separate the aft shuttlebay from the rest of the secondary hull, and also lines the deck and bulkheads of the main bay. This reduces the threat faced by most carrier vessels: the risk that a hit to a vehicle storage bay could cause damage to the rest of the ship resulting from detonation of Shuttle fuel supplies, and even shuttle warp core breaches.
In 2385, USS Shiloh and her active sisters was upgraded to Shiloh Flt. 1 Mod 2 Specifications. This includes the removal of all Type XII Phaser Arrays and replacement with Type XVII Rotary Pulse Phaser Turrets. The 8 turrets are midline mounted, giving the ship a slight resemblance to Warships of Old. Also the ship’s computer and sensor systems were upgraded.
In 2383, a year before Shiloh Herself was pulled out of mothballs and reactivated, Starfleet began developing two new versions of the venerable class. The first, denoted Shiloh, Flight 2, was designed as a counterpart to the Soveriegn class. The Flight 2 ships featured reduced armament, and increased the ship’s capabilities for scientific, exploratory, and diplomatic missions. The first Shiloh Flt. 2 was to be USS Gettysburg, but was recommissioned USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-F) following the Enterprise E’s loss a few weeks earlier. Flight 3 was the most radical departure from the original designs. Armed minimally, the Flight 3s, Or Trips, were designed as a Hospital Ship, capable of treating up to 7,000 patients. The ship’s crew would be comprised mostly of Medical personnel. Of a crew of 1,000 proposed for the Trip, 900 would be medical staff.

Ships’ names in white are ships in commission. Blue names are Ships in commission refited to Flight 1, Mod 2. Ships in Red have been lost, and ships in green are ships under construction or in pre-production. All ships listed here in green have been approved for construction if construction hasn’t already begun.
Note: Shiloh Flight 1 Mod 3 variant features 10 retractable anteannea. The dorsal and ventral antenea each feature a number of perpendicular arms extending from the mast. this gives those two a resemblence to the mainmasts of ancient sailing vessels. the other 8 extend from the saucer section, 2 on the port dorsal side, 2 on the port ventral side, 2 on the starboard ventral side, and 2 on the starboard dorsal side. each of these is housed in the gaps left when the ship's Type XII Phaser Strips were removed. the F1M3 variant also features an expanded Conn, which is a combination Bridge and Combat Information Center, located on Deck 2. Deck 1 features a communications control center, reminescint of an ancient airfield control tower. the Ship can coordinate up to 40 capitol ships and 144 fighters, plus facilitate coordination between space and ground forces. at present, only one Shiloh Flt. 1 Mod 3 is in service, and no new vessels of this variant are planned.
